So this is my first article that got published on A Fashion Friend, during the course of my internship with them. I found the topic very interesting & I felt that it is quite a big advancement in the cosmetics industry, which very little is actually known & spoken about. Changing the Face of the Beauty Industry

Cosmetics have been and always will be an essential part of human society, but human consumption is far exceeding the rate of replenishment of the planet’s natural resources. As a result, consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the health dangers posed by synthetic cosmetics and personal care products, and their disastrous effects on the environment and individuals. Therefore, the world has turned its attention to sustainable manufacturing and natural ingredients in cosmetics.


Sustainable cosmetics refer to products that are made from renewable resources and sustainable manufacturing practices. Compared to Organic and Natural products, Sustainable products are even more desirable and environment-friendly.

Not only that, but products that are only Organic or Natural are limited to a narrow group of ingredients used in their formulations and create the risk of depleting non-renewable natural resources. Sustainable cosmetics, on the other hand, can make use of an array of natural products and green practises that contribute to their goal of lowering the environmental impact of the cosmetic industry on the planet.

These green practises and eco-conscious ingredients can be utilized and implemented from ethical, raw-material sourcing, to the process of production, throughout packaging, up until shipping and even to recycling afterwards.

Well-known beauty companies that have made some exceptional advances in the sustainability of the beauty industry are L’Oreal, Garnier, Estée Lauder, and Clarins.

These corporations are working towards long-term environmental sustainability. Their strategies include powering their companies with 100% renewable energy that are generated from natural resources, such as sunlight, wind, rain and geothermal heat which is naturally replenished. Some of them even make use of 100% renewable or recycled materials for all their products and packaging, which means that zero consumer and manufacturing waste that go to landfills, all while conserving resources and reducing greenhouse gas emission with their environmentally-friendly formulas.

All these efforts have hugely minimized these companies’ carbon footprints and are completely vegetarian-friendly, by removing synthetic chemicals from their products and not testing any cosmetics on animals.

The sustainability of the cosmetics industry is not ONLY dependant on the companies who produce these products but also the consumers who buy and consume the goods. L'Oréal and Garnier have teamed up with TerraCycle to create the free Beauty Products Recycling Program where you can collect your used cosmetics products and packaging, and ship them to Terracycle to recycle, completely free of charge to the consumer.

There are many 'green' lessons to learn from an industry that was once associated with ‘vanity products’. This is just the beginning. With education and responsible purchasing practises, consumers have the power to stop pollution caused by cosmetic chemicals and benefit from totally green beauty cabinets.

Enter the Internet

This is my first article I did for A Fashion Friend, before I got accepted to do an internship for them this year. This is the only one (of all my articles that I did for them) that didn't get published on their site but I thought it deserved some exposure, so here it is. Have a look at it, check out the links and spread the love.

Young FaniSun

Fani Segerman is the daughter of the man who found Rodriguez but that is not what this internet sensation is famed for in the city of Cape Town.

Meet Young FaniSun, the model/stylist who studies psychology during the day, works on her fashion label at night and is proudly obsessed with the internet. She has a style that’s worth celebrating and a work ethic that is quite intimidating.

In 2010, Fani and her two best friends, Na’ama Tsalik and Isaline Goemaere started their own blog-slash-second-hand-label called Crazy White Bitches. They had an extremely huge response and soon started road tripping around South Africa, sourcing crazy, 90’s, 80’s, and retro clothing, shoes and accessories, which they would sell at The Waiting Room. These sales were more like parties than actual sales, where the girls usually ended up dancing on all their stock and encouraging men to try on their extensive selection of swimming costumes.

Crazy White Bitches is more than just a blog, though. It is a platform where the girls share all their weird and wonderful obsessions, pushing the boundaries and re-inventing the nostalgic. They aim to showcase the incredible styles and art coming out of South Africa and attempt to provide a platform for others to express themselves more confidently.

Since then Young FaniSun started her own fashion label called Magic, dabbled a bit in DJing and she was even the face of MrPrice for a while. She was featured on one of the billboards for Scar and was also used as a hair model for them for a while.

Fani is currently employed under My Friend Ned as a scout-slash-general-brand-manager-slash-producer but she’s also a casting director at Scout’s Honour.

On top of all that, Young FaniSun is also a part-time stylist for TV commercials and stills; however, she says she could never be a full-time stylist as the industry here is just too small and limiting for her. Basically, she couldn’t choose one career path, so she seems to have chosen all of them.It is obvious that Young FaniSun is no slacker. From her distinctive bowl haircut to her irreverent dress sense, all the way down to her unique tattoos, it is clear that Fani Segerman can not be placed in a box and labelled. She is a one-of-a-kind, Cape Town original.
